Boekenhoutskloof

The Wolftrap Red

£9.99

Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, the farm’s name means “ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making.

In 1993 the farm and homestead was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier.

When the farm was founded, the Franschhoek valley was far wilder than it is today – as the wolf trap once discovered on the estate goes to show. Today, the mountains are still alive with indigenous animals, including the majestic leopard. No evidence of wolves has ever been found though, so the wine created this wine to remind us of the mysteries and legends of days gone by.

The nose is opulent and intense, oozing with rich, ripe dark fruits and plums
and subtle whiffs of cloves, cardamon, black pepper and perfume. Brambles,
blackberry and liquorice flavours intertwine with hints of raw biltong on the
palate, and the fruitcake spiciness of the nose follows through beautifully. The
midpalate is velvety and brooding, with juicy cranberry fruit, vibrant acidity
and integrated, silky oak tannins creating exceptional balance. Savoury
nuances add to the layered complexity of the wine, with accents of black olive
tapenade and cassis lingering on a smooth, round finish.
